How to Survive Halloween After Jaw Surgery

Jaw Reconstruction Fort Lauderdale, FLGoing to the grocery store this time of year can feel like you’re in Willy Wonka’s factory. Not only are there bags and bags full of candy and other tantalizing treats, but there are people dressed up lurking behind every corner. If you are getting jaw surgery from Dr. Leslie H. Sultan this season, going down those candy aisles can seem more distressing than anything– especially if you don’t know what types of treats you can eat during recovery.

Avoid Sticky Stuff

Taffy, caramel, gummy candies, and gum are particularly rough on your jaw and can cause it to tense up and become painful. Rather than putting your jaw through all of that pain and discomfort for just a minute of happiness, try eating candy that’s softer like chocolate.

Try Soft Treats

When you traditionally think of Halloween, candy is likely the first thing that comes to mind. Try switching things up this year and eat soft baked goods instead. Treats like cupcakes, brownies, and soft cookies can help satisfy your sweet tooth without placing too much strain on your jaw.

Watch the Sugar

Even though it’s okay to have a treat or two during Halloween, make sure that you aren’t consuming too much sugar while you’re in recovery. We encourage our patients to eat a well-balanced diet that contains enough vitamins with foods such as green smoothies and homemade vegetable soup.

Whether or not you have some little ones to take Trick or Treating this year, it’s easy to indulge a little too much in candy and other sugary treats. And although having a piece here and there may be okay for your waistline, certain candies like taffy and even licorice can wreak havoc on your teeth and jaw. If you are getting jaw surgery from Dr. Leslie H. Sultan, it’s important that you adjust your diet so that you can recover quicker.
