How to Properly Recover from Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants are one of the most, if not the most, effective ways at getting back your ability to chew and smile after losing one of your natural teeth. By surgically implanting a metal rod into your gums— which will act as your tooth’s root— a dental crown will be placed on the top in order to give you back your full capability to chew and smile just as before. If you are planning on getting a dental implant from Dr. Leslie Sultan, it’s important that you know how to properly care for it while in recovery. REad on to learn more.

dental care Avoid Certain Foods

Once your mouth has fully healed, you will be able to enjoy all of your favorite foods once again, including things like steak. However, while you are in recovery, it’s important to abstain from certain foods as your mouth fully heals. For the few days following your dental implant surgery, try to eat foods that are soft and easy to chew, such as mashed potatoes, pasta, and ice cream.

Ice It

Your mouth will probably be inflamed and feel a bit tender to the touch after you get your dental implant. However, by icing the affected area, you can help to reduce any sort of swelling and can get back to looking and feeling like your normal self in no time. When icing your mouth, make sure that you use either a soft gel ice pack or something soft to the touch in order to avoid any additional discomfort.

Take Your Antibiotics

Depending on how the surgery goes, Dr. Leslie Sultan may or may not prescribe you with some oral antibiotics to help reduce the chance of you getting an oral infection. If prescribed an antibiotic, be sure to take it religiously because the only way for antibiotics to fully work is when they are taken on a rigid schedule and for as long as directed— otherwise an infection could come back and spread.

By avoiding certain foods, icing your mouth, and taking your antibiotics, you can help to recover more quickly from your dental implant surgery. To learn more about dental implants or to schedule an appointment, contact Dr. Leslie Sultan’s office today!
