What is orthognathic surgery?

adobestock 230420786 1 Dr. Leslie Sultan describes orthognathic surgery as a procedure used to straighten the jaw into proper alignment, which in turn corrects tooth positioning. This may be done to correct issues patients may have with breathing, speech, and proper chewing, while also addressing aesthetic issues such as harmony and balance of the jaw and chin area. Orthognathic surgery is performed for a variety of reasons. Patients with the following problems may consider speaking to our oral surgeon about treatment:

  • Receding or excessive jaws
  • Chronic jaw pain
  • Tooth wear from bruxism
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing
  • Speech difficulties
  • Poor bite alignment
  • Unbalanced facial aesthetics
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Chronic mouth breathing

While many patients who have bite-related issues, such as poor bite alignment or overbites, underbites, or crossbites, orthognathic surgery may be recommended in situations where traditional orthodontics may not work. In fact, it is found that 10% of the population with bite alignment problems may benefit from jaw surgeries instead of orthodontia.

How is the surgery planned before the procedure?

Dr. Leslie Sultan uses many of the most state-of-the-art devices and technologies in his practice for precision care. Using the Simplant 3D treatment planning software, he can create a virtual replica of the patient’s facial structure and plan the entire procedure using this specialized computer imaging device.
