Understanding Chin Anatomy
Our chin defines our lower face, adding to our overall facial balance. Patients often have one of several common chin-related concerns, including:
- Weak chins that lack sufficient definition.
- Receding chins that form an unbalanced appearance.
- Chin asymmetry is when the jawbone grows unevenly, leading to an unbalanced face.
Various naturally occurring chin bone shapes, like square, oval, and round, contribute to these conditions and will influence the type of implant selected for use.
Exploring Chin Implant Options
There are three major types of chin implants available for use. These are:
- Silicone Implants:Â With a natural feel and impressive durability, silicone implants come in various shapes and sizes. They are surgically attached to the jawbone but do not fuse to the bone or join with surrounding tissues, making them replaceable in the future.
- Polyethylene Implants:Â Affordable and available in several shapes and sizes, polyethylene implants are porous. This feature allows tissues to grow through and around the implant, fusing it into place and making future changes more difficult. Unlike silicone, polyethylene is not easily sculpted. Custom-made implants may require additional wait times and cost.
- Gore-Tex:Â Similar to polyethylene, Gore-Tex, or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, are porous implants that allow tissue to grow through and hold the implant.
