What Are Zygoma Implants?

Zygoma When patients lose teeth, dental implants usually offer the best solution.

However, for those with extensive bone loss in the back of the upper jaw, traditional dental implants are often not possible.

That’s where Zygoma implants come in. These specialized implants are anchored in the cheekbone (also called the zygomatic bone, hence the name). They’re longer and more angled than traditional implants while still providing stability and support for artificial teeth.

Let’s learn more about we use those implants at the Sultan Center for Oral Facial Surgery to give our patients the smile they want.

Benefits of Zygoma Implants

Patients who have already experienced a failed bone grafting procedure may find Zygoma implants to be a life-changing solution. Benefits include:

  • Addressing Bone Loss: Prolonged denture use or missing teeth can both lead to bone resorption and deterioration, especially in the rear part of the upper jaw. With Zygoma implants, there’s no need for extensive bone grafting surgeries, which often entail a longer treatment process.
  • Enhanced Stability: By anchoring the implants in the dense zygomatic bone, Zygoma implants offer reliable stability for full-arch prostheses. It also means patients can stop worrying about dietary limitations for dentures. Instead, they can return to eating and enjoying a diversity of foods.
  • Simplified Treatment: In contrast to complicated grafting procedures, Zygoma implants are pretty straightforward. Dr. Sultan places two to four Zygoma implants at an angle, sometimes complemented with additional implants.

Placement Process and Recovery

Placing Zygoma implants requires specialized training. Dr. Sultan has that training, and even uses computer-guided imagery for precise positioning of the implants in the cheekbone.

Once a patient receives their implants, they start a necessary healing period, allowing the implants to gradually integrate with the jawbone.

The duration of this process varies. But with Dr. Sultan, patients can expect to receive a personalized timeline during their consultation. Once the implants are sufficiently anchored, abutments (posts) are attached, and full-arch artificial teeth can be secured.

The overall duration of the Zygoma implant process often depends on bone growth rates, but the procedure itself isn’t time-consuming. Dr. Sultan can place the implants in one day, with subsequent healing taking a few months.
