The wisdom teeth, or third molars, are known for being problematic for many patients. These teeth, which are the last to develop in the smile, have a tendency to get stuck underneath the gum line due to impaction. Other times, they may come into the dental arch and affect alignment that had been achieved with braces. In some situations, they may erupt in the back of the mouth and increase a patient’s risk of developing cavities and infection because of the difficulty cleaning. Regardless of the situation, finding an oral surgeon who can perform removal is the next step for many patients. Dr. Leslie Sultan and his team at the Sultan Center for Oral Facial Surgery work routinely with patients who have problematic wisdom teeth and offer surgical and non-surgical removal.
How are wisdom teeth removed?
There are two different ways in which a wisdom tooth may be removed:
- Surgical – surgical extraction is done when a wisdom tooth has not yet erupted through the gumline. This is common in impacted wisdom teeth, or when the wisdom teeth have not come through but the professional is trying to avoid that to maintain alignment of the dental arch. Patients have proper anesthesia and sedatives to undergo this procedure and can expect several days of recovery following their extraction.
- Simple – another type of removal for wisdom teeth is simple extraction. Simple extraction can be performed when the dentist can see the tooth above the gum line. The tooth is simply wedged from the bone and removed in just minutes. This type of removal is far less invasive and is the more desirable of the two options.
