What is Bone Grafting?
The bone grafting procedure is performed in order to “build up,” or add structure to the existing bone. After tooth loss, degeneration of the jawbone is a major concern. This is because bone is stimulated when we chew by the force that travels through teeth roots into bone. When a great deal of breakdown occurs beneath the gums, the entire structure of an arch can change, making it difficult even to obtain a good fit with dentures. It was once thought that bone that had degraded could not be replaced, but bone grafting can now recreate the structure needed to support implants and their restorations.
Bone grafting is a completely customized treatment. In some cases, bone growth can be stimulated by adding tissue around an implant at the time of insertion. Sometimes, however, the grafting procedure may need to be completed prior to implant surgery in order to allow sufficient time for regeneration.
Grafting bone from another area of the body, or using artificial material, can be the key to lifelong stability for dental implants. Without this step, there is a risk that implants will not fully stabilize, or that they will not maintain the highest level of stability for as long as they should.
