What is a zygoma implant?
A zygoma implant is a specialized implant that is used differently than a traditional implant. With most dental implants, the implant is placed into the bone of the jaw to replace a single tooth or to support a restoration such as a bridge or a denture. However, some patients have inadequate bone to place a dental implant due to bone resorption that naturally occurs over time after a tooth has been lost. In situations such as this, a zygomatic implant may be placed. Instead of being placed into the jaw, the implant is placed into the zygomatic bone, or “cheek bone.” This allows a patient who might otherwise not be able to have a dental implant to place one and enjoy the benefits.
Who is a good candidate for zygomatic implants?
Patients who have experienced bone resorption will benefit from the placement of a zygomatic implant. To determine candidacy, Dr. Leslie Sultan will have several x-rays done to evaluate the bone available for placing an implant. If insufficient, the zygomatic bone will be considered. This requires a special procedure for placement but can provide patients with dental implants in a situation where they may not be considered a proper candidate without the need for added services to prepare the area such as bone grafting.
