Why might teeth be extracted?
There are many reasons why a patient may seek dental extractions:
- Preparation for placing full dentures
- Remove a tooth with a failed root canal
- Remove a tooth that is impacted underneath the gum line
- Preparation for orthodontics, especially when overcrowding is a concern
- Remove a tooth that is damaged and cannot be restored
What can I expect from my dental extraction?
There are two types of dental extractions that may be performed by Dr. Leslie Sultan. The first is a simple extraction. This takes just a few minutes and removes a tooth that has already come up through the gum line. The oral surgery can remove the tooth using specialized instruments by extracting it from the foundation of bone holding it in place. Surgical extraction, on the other hand, does require the dentist to cut into the gum tissue to access a tooth that has not yet erupted. This is often required for impacted teeth underneath the gum line. This procedure may require stitches and extended recovery time when compared to a simple extraction. Both procedures are performed with proper sedation and anesthetics to ensure the patient is comfortable from beginning to end. Patients also leave the practice with aftercare instructions from their oral surgeon to reduce the risk of poor clotting or infection.
