Facts You Didn’t Know About Wisdom Teeth
- Posted on: Nov 30 2017
Unlike their name proclaims, believe it or not, your wisdom teeth don’t provide you with any wisdom. In fact, wisdom teeth get their name because of the age in which they come in at which is a lot older than your other molars. Let’s face it: the only wisdom you can get from your wisdom teeth is by learning a bit more about them. Here are some unique facts that you didn’t know about your wisdom teeth.
They Are There
Similar to Santa Claus, just because you can’t see your wisdom teeth, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In fact, more often than not, patients don’t know their wisdom teeth are there until they get them removed. However, although it’s rare, not all patients have wisdom teeth— if you are the rare exception, congratulations!
They Need to Be Removed
You may think, “Oh, if they haven’t bothered me so far, I don’t need to have them removed,” but you’d be wrong. Wisdom teeth can cause a variety of different oral issues such as ruining your bite, causing overcrowding, and more. During your initial consultation with Dr. Leslie H. Sultan, we will perform an oral exam, x-rays, and go over all of your options.
Early Extraction is Best
Remember that the sooner you get your wisdom teeth removed, the better. When there’s not enough space for your wisdom teeth to erupt through the gums, it can damage the surrounding teeth in the process which is a condition called impacted wisdom teeth. By getting them removed early on, however, you can prevent this from happening altogether.
