What Comes After TMJ Replacement

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can experience various oral and facial symptoms that may be caused by certain conditions in the joint such as disc displacement. When the patient continually experiences persistent pain and noticeable jaw dysfunction, which do not respond to non-surgical interventions, then it may be best to consider TMJ treatment. Here at our Fort Lauderdale oral and facial surgery practice, Dr. Sultan  offers patients with several TMJ treatment options including surgery and replacement.

Before you go through TMJ replacement, Dr. Sultan will walk you through the procedure and provide you with information on what to expect after surgery as well as instructions pertaining to your recovery.

How long will recovery take for TMJ replacement surgery?

Usually, the patient who has undergone TMJ replacement surgery can already resume daily activities in about four to six weeks; however, full recovery is still not assured during this time. It may take several months for the side effects, like swelling and tingling, to subside.

What diet should I follow after TMJ replacement?

Right after your TMJ surgery, you may be required to follow a soft diet to almost liquid diet. Most patients would have to stick to a liquid diet for about two to four weeks. As you begin to recover, you can gradually return to your normal diet although hard and sticky foods still need to be avoided.

How long will the effects of TMJ surgery last?

Although the procedure will make use of durable materials, there is no assurance that these implants will last forever. The lifespan of your TMJ prosthetics still depends on the materials they are made of, your medical and surgical history, and how you handle the physical demands of the joint.
